Chain cleaning: every 500 miles or only when it needs it?

My riding is mostly dry pavement. I inspect often, but the chain rarely looks dirty at 500 miles. Are people cleaning by mileage, after rain, or based on appearance?

After rain or a dusty ride gets priority. Otherwise I wipe, inspect, and add a light amount of lube rather than doing a full solvent bath on a schedule.

    Street miles, track lessons.

The important habit is checking slack in several wheel positions. Cleaning frequency gets more attention than tight spots and alignment.

I mark maintenance in a phone note. It keeps me from relying on memory without turning the bike into a laboratory.

    Maintenance before modifications.
